An international research team at Swansea University in the UK recently received an international award for developing a graphene biosensor-based diagnostic test for ovarian cancer that is said to offer quicker and more accurate results in a less expensive, as well as portable way.
An annual prize worth £50,000 has been awarded to two young Manchester researchers to help set-up a new graphene business venture. The Eli and Britt Harari Graphene Enterprise Award is awarded each year to help the implementation of a commercially-viable business proposal from students, post-docs and recent graduates of The University of Manchester

Applied Graphene Materials, which produces specialty graphene materials, has released its unaudited preliminary results for the year ended 31 July 2017. The company's total income was 0.3 million, the same as in 2016, with a EBITDA loss of 4.0 million, compared to £4.2 million in 2016.

Durham University spin-out Applied Graphene Materials has revealed plans for a share placing to raise a minimum of £9m. The shares are being offered as part of an accelerated bookbuild and the funds raised will be used by the business to support joint development activity with customers, along with the development of its Structural Ink programme.
Haydale Graphene Industries PLC (LON:HAYD) is proposing to raise up to £9mln through the issue of shares at not less than 120p each. A book-building process is under way to place 5mln new shares, while qualifying shareholders will be able to subscribe shares at the same price.
Applied Graphene Materials' pre-tax losses narrowed to £4.3m in the year to the end of July from £4.5m last time with total income stable at £0.3m. The group also announced a proposed fundraising with a placing to raise a minimum of £9m and an open offer to raise up to £1m -both before expenses.
